SAMUT SAKHON - Visiting democracy icon Aung San
Suu Kyi on Wednesday morning told Myanmar migrant workers that she work
to develop their homeland so that they can return home and use their
skills to help further improve the country.
Thousands of local people and migrant workers packed a narrow street
in Samut Sakhon to hear the Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel
laureate, who arrived in Bangkok late last night on her first trip
abroad in 24 years.
Suu Kyi, speaking from the balcony of the Library and Office of the
Migrant Worker Rights Network building, told the migrant workers that
she came to Thailand to learn about their conditions first hand.
"I will never forget you and I will discuss your troubles with the
Thai government to help improve your well-being," the National League
for Democracy Party leader said.
"I ask you to be patient and please work to your full potential as
assigned by your employers. I'll try to develop our country so you can
come back home and apply your skills and knowledge and make our country
prosper."
She called on the Myanmar migrant workers to work hard and not to damage the reputation of their country.
Suu Kyi was scheduled to meet Opposition Leader Abhisit
Vejjajiva, the former prime minister, at 3pm Wednesday at the Shangrila
hotel, where the World Economic Forum on East Asia is being held from
May 30 to June 1.
