Today, I received a message from my friend, Ashin Htavara, one of the leaders of the Saffron Revolution, asking me to share his address at the World Alliance of Religions’ Peace Summit Seoul:
"Distinguished guests, brothers and sisters, ladies and gentlemen, I am very happy to be with you here in Korea today and have a great opportunity to share with you for peace.
Peace is a very beautiful: if there is no peace, there is no beauty. So Peace is needed today and always for all of us in the world.
The world becomes more and more crowded, but man becomes increasingly isolated and lonely. The world is still in a state of chaos, lacking of peace and real happiness. So we are living today in a world torn between despair and hope.
Peace is always obtainable. The peace which we all desire, peace in our hearts and in our minds, peace between neighbours and among nations, is not a miracle. The way to peace is not only through prayers and rituals.
Peace is the result of man’s harmony with his or her fellow beings and with his or her environment. It can only come about as a result of a reconstruction of thought, feeling and action by means of the spirit of fellowship and friendship and that is the duty of all mankind.
Mutual understanding and sincerity are lacking very badly. One man cannot trust another today. To establish peace among mankind, each and everyone must first learn to practice the ways leading to the extinction and eradication of hatred, greed and delusion which are the roots of all evil forces.
Ladies and gentlemen, Peace cannot exist together with hatred, peace cannot exist together with greed, and peace cannot exist together with delusion.
Peace can be established by eradicating hatred, greed and delusion. There is a lot of hatred today in this world. Hatred creates war and violence, anger creates war and violence and ignorance creates war and violence. That is why hatred should be replaced with loving-kindness, greed replaced with generosity or with detachment, and delusion replaced with wisdom.
We need peace very badly in the world today. Every moment of peace has a tremendous effect on the mind. Peace of mind, no matter how momentarily, is of great value. And peace is obviously not confined to any one country or any particular religion or any particular nation or race. It is universal.
That is why, please Do Not say that this religion is peace, that religion is peace, my religion is peace, your religion is peace.
No! Peace is only one kind, not many.
So, please say that Peace is my religion. There is no evil in wanting peace. Peace is not harmful to oneself and others.
Thank you. May Peace prevail in every corner of the world. Thank you."
Ashin Htavara (Norway)
